As the largest coal shipping port in China, people unfamiliar with the city of Qinghuangdao could be forgiven for thinking it was a rather uninspiring industrial city. This would be an unfair assessment .Although the sea trade of coal provides the main economic force for the city, there are other reasons for drawing people here, to work, to visit, and to take in the sports, the vibrant city culture, the leisure opportunities, and the coastal attractions of the Hebei Province. Qinghuangdao hotels serve a variety of purposes but ultimately provide visiting executives and leisure seekers with a convenient base in a popular and important city.

The city, for the purposes of a visit, may be divided into three main areas, Beidaihe, Haigang District, and Shanhaiguan. Beidaihe is a former fishing village and now a major seaside resort. The fine yellow sand beach stretches for 10km, from the Yinjiao Pavilion to the Daihe River and with a shallow incline from the shore it is very popular with families for summer holidays. Set back from the beach are the twin peaks of Mt. Lianfeng and in-between are forests, lush vegetation, rivers, paths and bridges all of which make a charming and unspoilt scene. Here is where the head government officials of China spend their summers, and many more people besides.

The Haigang District is the harbour city, where the port is located as well as Yan Shan University. This is the city proper, where bustling downtown streets come alive with possibilities for doing business and for taking a break from it. Most Qinghuangdao hotels are found here, and especially those perfectly attuned to the needs of the corporate traveller. The main shopping, dining, and cultural sights are found here too mostly centred around Minzu Road and the Central Business District is immediately apparent via the high rise architectural symbols of success.

Shanhaiguan could scarcely be more different. A major tourist destination, like Beidaihe, it is not the beaches which draw the visitors here but the Great Wall of China. This is where that most famous of Chinese landmarks meets the Pacific Ocean after traversing some 9000 km from Lop Nur in the west. Some of the most popular parts of the wall are found here, including the 'First Pass Under Heaven' and where the wall terminates out to sea, the 'Old Dragon's Head'. This part of the wall dates from the Ming Dynasty, and today the First Pass under Heaven remains one of the best preserved of the Wall's passes.

Qinghuangdao is clearly then no ordinary industrial city but rather presents some of the greatest natural and man-made treasures of the nation. Tours of Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan are widely available from the main city Haigang District and information on these and the other attractions of the city will be available from most Qinghuangdao hotels. It would take an extended stay to fit in all of the tours and sights available but certainly a visit to the wall should top the list if time is a limiting factor.

Many visitors who stay within the Haigang District may feel little need to explore further afield with so much going on in the city and some of the hotels here have enough on-site facilities to keep the most discerning guest happy. Luxury hotels will obviously have more in the way of leisure features, such as pools, spas and fitness suites, to match their extended provision for business clients, but any good hotel will serve first class food within stylish restaurants and have lounges and other public spaces which will encourage guests to spend more of their time closer to home.
